1 Plate Tectonics

2 Definition A tectonic plate is:
A piece of the Earth’s crust that slides on top of the Mantle. There are two types of crust/tectonic plates: OCEANIC & CONTINENTAL

3 What causes the movement of tectonic plates?
Plates at our planet's surface move because of the intense heat in the Earth's core that causes molten rock in the mantle layer to move. It moves in a pattern called a convection cell that forms when warm material rises, cools, and eventually sink down. As the cooled material sinks down, it is warmed and rises again. Draw a model of convection currents in the mantle on your brochure.

4 What tectonic plate do we live on?
North American Plate Open your brochure & Color it YELLOW

5 How many major tectonic plates make up Earth’s crust
How many major tectonic plates make up Earth’s crust? Use the map to answer. Color all the MAJOR tectonic plates RED. Color all the minor tectonic plates BROWN.

6 How far do tectonic plates move each year?
centimeters

7 Draw and complete this chart using your graphic organizer from 3/12 (in your journal) & book pages Boundaries Quick Sketch Using Arrows What Happens to the Crust? Where on Earth Can You Find One? Convergent Divergent Transform Subduction

8 How were the Himalayan Mountains formed?

9 What causes volcanoes?
