8 Statistics About Welfare Recipients
As of March 2015, the number of TANF recipients is just over 3 million, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. (washingtonpost.com) Approximately 40% of SNAP recipients are white, making white people the largest racial group on food stamps. When it comes to TANF recipients, approximately 30% are white, 30% are Latino and 30% are black, with several other racial groups making up the remaining 10% of recipients. ( Families receiving welfare average about two children. All families in America average just under 2.5. Several studies, including a 1996 report from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, have found that there is no significant difference in the rate of illegal-drug use by welfare applicants and other people. (TIME Magazine)

9 Bill Clinton’s Welfare Reform
1996 Welfare Reform Act

10 Definition of Welfare Government-funded programs that provide economic support, goods, and services to unemployed or underemployed people Often aimed at helping those who need it most, such as single mothers, the elderly, and the mentally disabled

11 Welfare in American History
Government assistance began in America after the Civil War with government aid to help families of Civil War veterans During the Great Depression, many programs were started by FDR to support struggling families Since it began, many have argued strongly against welfare Total Families on Welfare

12 Does Welfare help the poor?
Logical Reasoning Does Welfare help the poor?

13 WELFARE HELPS! Logical Reason #1
Welfare gives the poor more money. When they receive that money, because they are poor, they will immediately spend it. This will increase jobs in the economy.

14 Increase in Income of the poor, increases the demand for goods they buy
supply demand Original Quantity of goods New Quantity of goods Quantity of Goods that the poor buy

15 Increase in Income of companies, increases the demand for the people they hire
supply demand Original Quantity of Labor New Quantity of Labor Quantity of labor

16 So welfare will… Give the poor more income to spend on things they like to buy (food, electricity, mansions, nice cars, etc.) This means businesses that produce these items will be selling more items and making more money. So their demand for labor will increase, and they will hire more people!

17 WELFARE HURTS! Logical Reason #2
Welfare discourages poor people to work. This will decrease the ability of businesses to produce goods and will raise prices and slow down the economy.

18 If less low-income people are working, companies that use low-income labor will produce less goods!
supply New Price of Goods New Quantity of Goods Original Price of Goods Start here 1st period demand Original Quantity of Goods Quantity of goods

19 So welfare will… Reduce incentives of poor people to work
Decrease productivity of businesses Decrease the number of goods in the market, and increase the price of those goods (No iPhone 10 for you!)
