1 Session 7 - Active Resistance

2 Aim of this session. To consolidate and extend parental presence.
What will be covered? 1-The meaning of active resistance 2-Working together and using supporters 3-Circles of concern 4-Message campaign Aim of this session.

3 Mission Statement Parents need to be thinking about active resistance.
Parents are to be encouraged to move on to identifying ways in which supporters can communicate directly with the child to help them act differently. This is about creating a change in relationships that will benefit the child and the family.

4 What is active resistance
A child behaving in an undesirable way requires an act of resistance on the part of the parent. Resistance is a concept, which assumes that the parent can be active at the same time as the child. What is active resistance

6 Types of demonstrations of resistance are
Against violence Against non-functioning; such as refusing to go to school & not getting up Against disconnection; such as social withdrawal Types of demonstrations of resistance are

7 PRINCIPLES UNDERPINNING ACTS OF VIOLENCE ARE :
Parent is at the centre. (How the parent behaves is the measure of success, not how the child behaves) The goal is not control BUT change It is an independent act and does not depend on the child's behaviour It is well prepared and not spontaneous PRINCIPLES UNDERPINNING ACTS OF VIOLENCE ARE :

8 Resistance can lead to parents discovering:
‘I can control my behaviour’ ‘I can deal with fears’ ‘I can stand up for my rights’ ‘I can predict my child's behaviour’ ‘I am not alone’ Resistance can lead to parents discovering:

9 Circle of Campaign Circle of Concern Message of Concern
Is a group of people that care about what is happening. They are concerned about parents, children, siblings. They can become supporters Occurs when parents let supporters know that violence or small-basket incidence has happened. Supporters send messages of love and support to the child. Supporters also emphasise that violence must stop. Communication can be via , telephone, text or letters. Social media sites should be used cautiously.

12 Testimonies from parents
“Being persistent gains respect. I have learned to stay calm . NVR has been successful in keeping my young girl in her placement,she said she feels safer with boundaries”. Autistic girl in her long term placement who displayed violent and controlling behaviour towards all members of the household.

13 Testimonies from parents
12 year old young boy in placement for five years, who was aggressive towards siblings, damage to home, verbal aggression towards carer and professionals, putting his placement in danger of breaking down. “NVR is a relaxing way of working; it is a planned way of working, and my sons behaviour is not a secret anymore” Testimonies from parents
