1 ISE – Systems Design Review
12402 ISE – Thomas Mittner 12401 ISE – Erik Hilley MSD I - Fall Quarter, 2011

2 Norms & Values 12401 & share the same set of written values as shown on EDGE. For interfacing and budget sharing purposes, this will be mutually beneficial. When there is communication from both teams, it is important to be thorough, accurate, professional and committed. 12401 & 02 will elaborate later on.

3 Mission Profile 12401 is responsible for building a wind turbine that will harvest wind energy which in turn will generate electric energy. This energy will be stored within a controlled storage device. 12402 must be able to accept the energy, regulate and convert it into useable power for charging batteries. 12402 must be able to accept up to ten, 7.2V batteries and charge anywhere from one to all ten batteries within four hours. The dock is theoretically capable of charging one of these empty batteries in 1.5 hours, and the full set will be dependent upon the power being generated from and how the power is transmitted from generation phase to individually battery charging phase.

4 Mission Profile cont. The battery charging unit should take users no longer than minutes to understand what it is, how its used, and how to tell the status of the batteries. The dock must be operable in certain weather requirements, as batteries will often be charged outdoors, subjected to the elements of Rochester. The dock should be robust as to work for as long as the LVE program needs to run for.

5 System Plan Overview

6 Efficiency Spreadsheet

7 Preliminary Budgeting

8 12402: Thomas Mittner As the systems engineer, I will be in charge on ordering the parts for the CDPC group. We will use some teamwork to determine the vendors to quote and then make a decision on where the parts will be ordered from. I will also deal directly with the personnel responsible for writing up the reqs to ensure that our ordering process goes smoothly. I will also maintain the budget and keep track of the cost/log book. We currently have $500 dedicated to group 12402, however I will converse with Erik (12401 ISE) if either his or my group have trouble with funds, or to see if funds need to be reallocated in some fashion. In addition to costs, quotes, and budgeting, I will be in charge of maintaining an interfacing notebook to ensure that our product will conform to specs and that all components and areas of our project will fit together seamlessly. This will take efforts from both the EE and ME interfacing managers within my group (Ryan and Matt O. respectively), as well as communications with the interfacing manager, Erik. There should be no surprises in the next phase of the project (detailed design or looking past that, creating and assembling), and maintaining the log as previously stated will prove critical to that.

9 12401: Erik Hilley

11 Looking Towards Detailed Design
As we plan to move forward into the detailed design phase, we plan on implementing a variety of strategies to ensure our products are meeting the needs of our customers and are conforming to our engineering metrics. Items we will be working on include, but are not limited to... Flow charts, feasibility analysis, failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), and quality function deployment (QFD).
