1 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment JBA Consulting

2 Purpose of a SFRA Identifying the key flood risks to a site
Historic flooding (e.g. June 2007). Predicted flood risk from all sources (fluvial, surface water, groundwater). Residual flood risk (lakes) Future flood risk (climate change). Ensuring safe and sustainable development of a site Avoiding areas of highest flood risk. Making sure flood risk isn’t increased flood risk elsewhere. Preparing detailed mapping of predicted flood extents at the site A tool for planners and developers. JBA Consulting

3 Flood risks – rivers Historic events Rivers
Notable fluvial flood events recorded in Eynsham July 1968, Dec 1985, Feb 2002, Jan 2007, June 2007 Sources of information: Recorded flood outlines WODC parish flood reports OCGV consultation responses Rivers Tributary of River Evenlode River Evenlode, Eynsham Mead Ditch JBA Consulting

4 Flood risks – surface water
Largely follow the routes of existing smaller watercourses and drain: Northwards into the watercourse at the north of the site Southwards towards A40 Eastwards towards Lower Road, and into the River Evenlode JBA Consulting

5 Flood risks – groundwater and lakes
Groundwater Lake Breach Associated with sand and Very unlikely to occur, however gravel deposits a ‘residual risk’ to the site JBA Consulting

6 Recommendations SFRA Key Findings
Sequential design of site - avoiding areas of highest flood risk. The site layout should be built around existing surface water flow paths on the site. Development will need to closely limit surface water runoff, to manage existing flood risks in Eynsham. Implement exemplar SuDS design, keeping water on the surface and providing multiple benefits. © Kiefer Creek Watershed Restoration Project © Thames21 JBA Consulting

7 Opportunities SFRA Key Findings amenity and recreation spaces
© Susdrain Opportunities There is sufficient space for development to be located in areas of low flood risk. ‘Making space for water’ provides great opportunities to incorporate blue-green infrastructure amenity and recreation spaces flood risk management education habitats for native species Incorporate into Masterplanning at early stage JBA Consulting © Susdrain
