2 What is the Fulbright Program?
In brief: The Fulbright Program was designed for the “promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science” – Senator J. William Fulbright

4 …So what does that mean? To achieve their goals, the Fulbright Program grants awards: 4000 grants to international students 1900 grants to US Students In class language-learning resource Cultural ambassador English Teaching Assistantship Independent research Pursuit of graduate study Study/Research

5 Eligibility U.S. citizen by application deadline
At least bachelor’s degree or equivalent by start of grant No doctoral degree by application deadline (then eligible for Fulbright Scholar program) Country-specific requirements, which could include (but not limited to): Proficiency in language of host country For graduate students: Preference for limited time (post- bachelor’s degree) spent in proposed host country

6 The Application: 1 page Statement of Grant Purpose
1 page Personal Statement Slate Online Application SOGP Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How Lay out the question that you’ll spend the year answering, the methodology for how you’ll do it, research plan and timeline (how you’ll spend your time), and feasibility. Also mak ethe country-specific case: why is this question of particular interest or relevance to this country? Personal Statement: Who are you as a person, and a potential cultural Ambassador for the US? What sparks your motiviation and interest in this project, and in this country / culture / language? SLATE

7 English Teaching Assistantship (ETA):
The name is exceedingly accurate: Assistant Teach English ~20hrs per week acting as an in-class resource for English-language learning students (varies by country) ~20hrs per week dedicated to “Host Country Engagement” A way to formalize Fulbright’s mission to facilitate cross-cultural engagement Using an extracurricular passion of yours to provide a vehicle for exchange, often- times geared towards explaining parts of American culture

8 The Application: The main components you will be responsible for producing are: 1 page Statement of Grant Purpose 1 page Personal Statement Slate Online Application Language Self-Evaluation (if necessary)

16 Crafting a Competitive Application:
It takes time. It takes great letters of recommendation. It will not expound on a love of culture or an uncritical appreciation of the Fulbright mission.
