6 Hebrews 3 7 So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice,

7 Hebrews 3 8 do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert,

8 Hebrews 3 9 where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did.

9 Hebrews 3 10 That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.'

10 Hebrews 3 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"

11 Hebrews 3 12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

12 Five Warnings Drifting Doubting result of hardened heart
3:7-4:13 result of hardened heart a sinful, unbelieving heart

13 failure of Israel to enter the Promised Land: Canaan
Background Psalm 95 failure of Israel to enter the Promised Land: Canaan Numbers 13-14

14 Hebrews 3 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"

15 A Historical Event = A Pictorial Parallel
Israel’s deliverance from Egypt by the blood of lambs and Power of God The Lamb of God who delivered us from the bondage of sin

16 Colossians 1:13-14 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

17 Hebrews 3 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"

18 The Rest? It was God’s will that Israel entered into a rest at Canaan - a promised inheritance It is God’s will that believers enter into a rest of Spiritual Inheritance

19 Ephesians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

20 Ephesians 1:11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will

21 Ephesians 1:15-23 15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,

22 Ephesians 1:15-23 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

23 Ephesians 1:15-23 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

24 Ephesians 1:15-23 18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you,

25 Ephesians 1:15-23 18b the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

26 Ephesians 1:15-23 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

27 Ephesians 1:15-23 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

28 Ephesians 1:15-23 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

29 Ephesians 1:15-23 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

30 Ephesians 1:15-23 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

31 Hebrews 3 14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

32 Two Types of REST Sabbath Rest Israel’s Rest

33 Hebrews 3 15 As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion."

34 Hebrews 3 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness..

35 Hebrews 3 16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? confess.

36 Hebrews 3 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the desert?

37 Hebrews 3 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?

38 Hebrews 3 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief. confess.

39 Hebrews 4 1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.

40 Hebrews 4 2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did;

41 Hebrews 4 2b but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

42 Hebrews 4 3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

43 Hebrews 4 3b "So I declared on oath in my anger,’ They shall never enter my rest.'" And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world.

44 Hebrews 4 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work."

45 Hebrews 4 5 And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest."

46 Hebrews 4 6 It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience.

47 Hebrews 4 7 Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before:

48 Hebrews 4 7b "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.

49 Hebrews 4 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath — rest for the people of God;

50 Hebrews 4 10 for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.

51 Hebrews 4 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.

52 Hebrews 4 12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow;

53 Hebrews 4 12b it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

54 Hebrews 4 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

55 Three Types of REST Sabbath Rest Israel’s Rest Final Rest

56 Hebrews 4 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work."

57 Genesis 2:2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

58 2 Timothy 2:11-13 11 Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him, we will also live with him;

59 2 Timothy 2:11-13 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him.
If we disown him, he will also disown us;

60 2 Timothy 2:11-13 13 if we are faithless, he will remain faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.

61 Three Types of REST Sabbath Rest Israel’s Rest Final Rest

62 Hebrews 3:7-4:13 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"

63 Deuteronomy 12:9 …since you have not yet reached the resting place and the inheritance the Lord your God is giving you…

64 Joshua 21:43-44 43 So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there.

65 Joshua 21:43-44 44 The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. …

66 Matthew 11:28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
