Structural chemistry of the isomers of lactic acid. The top representation shows the standard two-dimensional representation. In the other two, the smallest group (-H) attached to the central carbon atom is ‘directed’ away from the viewer. If the sequence of the other three (smallest to largest) is ‘clockwise’ as viewed, it is an R isomer, and an S isomer if the sequence is reversed.
