Chapter describing Soul, Karma, Jnana, and Dhyana Yoga. Chapter 7-12 Cream – describing Bhakti Yoga, Knowledge of Supreme and His opulence, most confidential knowledge, and also Universal form. Chapter Knowledge of three modes, divine and demoniac nature, division of faith, and ultimate conculsion – the perfection of renunciation.

3 Chapter 1 Observing the Armies
Text 1 dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre samavetā yuyutsavaḥ māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāś caiva kim akurvata sañjaya Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra, desiring to fight, what did they do?

5 Text 2 “Sañjaya said: O King, after looking over the army arranged in military formation by the sons of Pāṇḍu, King Duryodhana went to his teacher and spoke the following words.” Sanjaya – also a great devotee He understood Dhrtarashtra’s mind. Thus starts telling the situation on battlefield which will give him pleasure.

6 Text 3-11 Text 3-6 – Dhuryodhana informing about the strength of pandavas. Text 7-11 – informing about his own army generals and comparing both the armies.

7 Text 3,4,5 & 6 Dhuryodhana perfect diplomat – using appropriate words.
paśyaitāḿ pāṇḍu-putrāṇām ācārya mahatīḿ camūm vyūḍhāḿ drupada-putreṇa tava śiṣyeṇa dhīmatā “O my teacher, behold the great army of the sons of Pāṇḍu, so expertly arranged by your intelligent disciple the son of Drupada.” Dhuryodhana perfect diplomat – using appropriate words. Comparing the great generals in Pandava’s army with Bhima & Arjuna. Especially afraid of Bhima.

8 Text 7,8,9,10 &11 Text 7-9 – Dhuryodhana describing the warriors in his army. All these warriors were prepared to lay down there lives. Dhuryodhan’s confidence in his military strength. Text 10 aparyāptaḿ tad asmākaḿ balaḿ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam paryāptaḿ tv idam eteṣāḿ balaḿ bhīmābhirakṣitam “Our strength is immeasurable, and we are perfectly protected by Grandfather Bhīṣma, whereas the strength of the Pāṇḍavas, carefully protected by Bhīma, is limited.”
