2. Review of Jesus’ Resurrection:
We can sympathize with the disciples’ struggle to believe that Jesus really rose from the dead.
The disciples also struggled with believing that Jesus was the Christ since He had died.
The Great Commission is recorded this way in Acts:
Acts 1:6-8 (NIV)
6 So when they met together, they asked [Jesus], “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

3. Preview of Jesus’ Ascension:
Here’s an example of what Jesus said after His resurrection:
Luke 24:25-27 (NIV84)
25 [Jesus] said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
The next two weeks reviewing Paul’s first mission trip to Galatia.
This week, we’ll review Paul’s sermon in Galatia (Acts 13).
Next week, we’ll review how the Galatians in four cities responded to this gospel (Acts 14).

4. Backstory of Acts 13-14:
Barnabas was from the Island of Cyprus, but became a Christian in Jerusalem (Acts 4:36).
Barnabas had been the first Christian in Jerusalem to trust that Saul really was a Christian (Acts 9:27).
During a prayer meeting in Syrian Antioch, Barnabas and Saul were appointed as missionaries by the Holy Spirit and sent by their church on a mission trip from Syrian Antioch (Acts 13:1-3).
Their first stop was Paphos on the Island of Cyprus (Acts 13:4-12).
Their second stop was Perga in Pamphylia (Acts 13:13).
Their third stop was Pisidian Antioch in Galatia (Acts 13:14).
Saul had already been the main speaker in the story in Cyprus, but in Acts 13:13 “Saul” becomes “Paul” and the team of “Barnabas and Saul” becomes “Paul and his companions”. This never to changes back.

5. Acts 13:14-16a (NIV84)
14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue rulers sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak.”
16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said:

16 “Men of Israel and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers; [Genesis] he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt, with mighty power he led them out of that country, [Exodus] 18 he endured their conduct for about forty years in the desert, [Numbers-Deuteronomy] 19 he overthrew seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to his people as their inheritance. [Joshua] 20 All this took about 450 years.

7. Acts 13:20b-23 (NIV84)
20 “After this, God gave them judges [Judges-Ruth] until the time of Samuel the prophet [1 Samuel]. 21 Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. [1 Samuel] 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king [1-2 Samuel]. He testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’ [1 Sam. 13:14] 23 “From this man’s descendants [1 Kings-2 Chronicles] God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. 1 Samuel 13:14 (NIV84) 14 But now [Saul] your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart [David] and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”

8. Acts 13:20b-23 (NIV84)
24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. 25 As John was completing his work, he said: ‘Who do you think I am? I am not that one. No, but he is coming after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’ [Luke 3:16, see also: Matt. 3:11, Mark 1:7, John 1:27]

9. Acts 13:26-31 (NIV84)
26 “Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. [Matt. 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 18] 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem [Matt. 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20-21]. They are now his witnesses to our people [Acts-3 John]. Deuteronomy 21:22-23 (NIV84) 22 If a man guilty of a capital offense is put to death and his body is hung on a tree, 23 you must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

10. Acts 13:32-36 (NIV84)
32 “We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: “‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father.’ [Psalm 2:7] 34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: “‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’ [Isaiah 55:3] 35 So it is stated elsewhere: “‘You will not let your Holy One see decay.’ [Psalm 16:10] 36 “For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.

38 “Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: 41 “‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.’” [Hab. 1:5] Galatians 2:15-16 (NIV84) 15 “We who are Jews by birth and not ‘Gentile sinners’ 16 know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

38 “Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: 41 “‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.’” [Hab. 1:5] Psalm 51:1-2, 14, (NIV84) 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

38 “Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: 41 “‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.’” [Hab. 1:5] Romans 1:16-17 (NIV84) 16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” [Hab. 2:4]

14. Conclusion:
If so… I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through [Jesus] everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.
But, if you won’t believe in Jesus… Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: “‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.’” (Acts 13:38-41)
