1 What’s Covered?

2 The card says 5 but only 4 are showing
The card says 5 but only 4 are showing. How many dots are covered by the square? How do you know? What’s your proof?

3 I know that 1 + 4 = 5 therefore 1 is under the square.
If = 5 then I can read the card as 5 – 1 = 4 1 + 4 = 5 and 5 – 1 = 4 are inverse operations.

4 I can read the card 5 but something is missing so there are only 4.
5 - ? = 4

5 Since 1 + 4 = 5 then the ? must be 1
5 - ? = 4 is really 5 – 1 = 4

6 And if 5 – 1 = 4 then the inverse is 4 + 1 = 5.

7 We are going to work on inverse relationships.
I want you to use subtraction to solve this card.
