2. Why this campaign?
Never before have our pay, our pensions, our conditions of employment and our professionalism been under such direct attack
It is not an accident: this Government is determined to break up democratically controlled public education as we know it
A strategic response from the teacher unions: NUT and NASUWT working together on an unprecedented joint campaign
We are under attack over: Pay Freeze (2 years 0% two years 1%), Local Pay (likely to lead to even longer pay freeze in many areas), Performance Related Pay ( where progress up the pay spine is threatened and where the idea that your head can ttake away progress already made is floated). The pensions attacks are well known. Workload is through the roof.

3. NUT & NASUWT working together
The joint declaration is unprecedented. The two unions represent 85% of teachers in England and Wales (NUT 44 and NASUWT 41%). The division between our unions has held back the ability to organise the defence of teachers and education. There has never been such good cooperation. The essentail deal is_ NUT agrees to ballot on non strike sanctions like NASUWT and NASUWT agrees to take joint strike action with NUT.

What does the declaration cover?
Workload pressures: damaging teachers’ health, threatening educational standards
Pensions: unfair contribution increases and changes to pension ages
Pay: proposals for local pay and performance related pay and the continuation of the pay freeze
Conditions: attacks on national terms and conditions of service, including due to the academisation of schools
Jobs: arising from funding cuts and curriculum reforms

those who object to the fragmentation of the system are "happy with failure" and "enemies of promise”

Teachers over 50 protected
If your pension would have been £10,000 it is now £10,800 (but it should have been £15,000)

11. NUT Ballot Ballot papers arrive from June 25th
Get the votes in before the end of term
Actual close date is in September.
NUT pensions ballot is still valid
New ballot is to protect teachers pay and working conditions.
Pensions campaign continues in tandem – strike action would be on both campaigns.

12. What are our demands
We are demanding negotiations to cover all schools (academies included) and:
Provide protection on excessive workload
Limit inspections and observations
Defend the current pay arrangements (oppose school by school pay and threats to spine points) and for
The pay freeze to come to an end.

Hold a school based meeting
Check with members if ballots have arrived
(make a checklist)
Check that members have returned their forms
Don’t forget part-timers
Start talking to other teachers about taking
action together
Recruit any non-members

Through the pensions action the NUT has more reps and more members.
This means more reps to help us mobilise
Other active members can help reps in schools – and can visit nearby schools.
