Ocean Currents Elsie Jackson Jasmine Colon Edwin Cruz

2 Surface Currents The Surface Currents moves fast. Surface Currents makes up about 10% of all the water in the ocean. Transfer of energy from the wind to the water occurs at the upper layer of the water.

3 Deep Currents Deep currents are driven by density & Temperature. The movement of polar waters is a result of density differences. When water is cooled, it contracts, and the water molecules move closer together. When water is warmed, it expands and the water is less dense. Deep Currents moves slower than the surface currents which is known as a Drift

4 Coriolis Effect The Coriolis Effect is the deflection of the earth’s wind and ocean currents caused by the earth’s rotation. As a result of the of the wind belts and the Coriolis Effect, huge circles of moving water, called Gyres, are formed.

5 Turbidity Current A Turbidity Current is a strong current caused by an underwater landslide. Turbidity currents occur when large masses of sediment that have accumulated along a continental shelf or continental slope suddenly break loose and slide downward.

6 Vocabulary Gyres- huge circles of moving ocean water formed as a result of the wind belts and the Coriolis Effect. Surface Current- stream like movement of water on or near the surface of the ocean Deep Currents- stream like movement beneath the surface of the ocean Drift- weak, slow-moving ocean currents

7 Questions ??? ??? What are the two major types of ocean currents?
What is the Coriolis Effect? What is the result of density differences? What is the effect of the Turbidity Current? What is a drift?
