1 *metrics Project Summary
*metrics in Transition - Final Workshop 27-28 March 2019 SUB Göttingen Astrid Orth

2 Findings Behaviour on social media platforms is complex and divers
Existing patterns prohibit simple aggregations Alternative metrics not yet widely known If so, used with considerable caution To gain trust and be accepted by researchers *metrics need more context and greater openness I’d give you a first very high-level summary of our project’s results, but please hear more detailed explanations in the following presentations: - Usage of social media platforms (being the source of alternative metrics) is complex and divers, it includes patterns that make simple aggregations to narrow - Alternative metrics are not yet widely known and used with considerable caution (at least among researchers from social sciences and economics)

3 Awareness-building and education
Especially for early career researchers, to know about: Wide spectrum of various types of metrics, Their data sources, Application areas, as well as Strength and Limitations Become „metric-wise“ Rousseau, S., and Rousseau, R. (2017). Being metric-wise: heterogeneity in bibliometric knowledge. El Prof. Inf. 26, 480–487. DOI: /epi.2017.may.14 More fairness in research assessment, leveling the field regarding researchers‘ knowledge about how to optimize metrics for their own research outputs. „Should be part of any doctoral education so that „assessment processes […] would potentially be less distorted and the advantage of more knowledgeable researchers would be reduced“

4 Recommendations Check for applicability in a certain context
is very much dependent on the underlying data base (heterogeneity & dynamics of platforms, API’s, functionalities) results may vary considerably the current state does not suggest that simple one-dimensional metrics correctly reflect the scientific communication on web-based platforms Will be published as DINI recommendations paper

5 Integration in repositories
ZBW: EconStor SUB: GoeScholar/GRO GESIS: SSOAR VZG: Embedding in repository software
