About EAQC-WISE About NORMAN Sixth Framework Programme To support Member States implementing the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and designing water monitoring networks, the EAQC-WISE project (16 partners led by BRGM) was built with the ultimate objective to provide a blue print of an efficient and potentially sustainable pan-European Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) system in order to guarantee data reliability and comparability at river basin scale as well as at European and river basin scale. During the three years, the project aimed to evaluate the current status of QA/QC tools and systems, of standardisation and research needs, of current practices within the WFD information chain and of current practices within training services, in the frame of the WFD implementation. A survey has pointed out that a lot of products/services/practices exist in the field of QA/QC across the EU. But most practices arise from isolated approaches rather than from a whole QA/QC system. Therefore, recommendations for a Quality Control System for chemical monitoring under the WFD have been established, which combine the different QA/QC tools and measures. Emerging substances are of increasing concern to scientists, regulators, industry and the public. The EU-funded NORMAN project (17 partners led by INERIS) was launched in 2005 with the ultimate goal of establishing a permanent network of reference laboratories and research centres able to ensure, in collaboration with competent authorities, industry, standardisation bodies and NGOs: A rapid exchange of data and information on emerging substances on a global scale; Better data quality and comparability via validation and harmonisation of common (chemical and biological) measurement methods and monitoring tools for emerging substances; An independent and competent forum for the technical/scientific debate on issues related to emerging substances. At the end of those three years of EU funding, the goal has been achieved: NORMAN is now to become a non-profit association and, from January 2009, will start to operate as a permanent, self-sustaining network open to you and all interested stakeholders dealing with emerging substances. Its aim is to facilitate the exchange of information, debate and research collaboration at a global level on these challenging issues. JOINT EVENT 8th CMA plenary meeting EAQC-WISE final workshop NORMAN - Launch meeting of the new permanent network and project final workshop The workshop – Day 2 – 21 October The CMA activity 2 on quality assurance and control has the mandate to develop a common strategy (at European, national and river basin level) for quality assurance and control for chemical monitoring data covering both priority substances in surface/marine waters and pollutants monitored in groundwater. The EAQC-WISE project aims to support this activity and to give recommendations based on scientific results. This workshop will be the place to offer CMA members the project recommendations and to discuss its applicability and the potential impact on CMA activities. The workshop – Day 1 – 20 October As well as a presentation of the results achieved by the project during 2005–2008, the meeting on October will be the launch event for the new permanent network, and will include a presentation of: its aims and objectives; its activities linked with the Chemical Monitoring Activity of DG ENV; and the NORMAN Joint Programme of Activities for 2009–2011.
