2 Setting up the LOCKSS network
CARINIANA Setting up the LOCKSS network

3 Developing a sustainable digital preservation program to suite Brazilian universities and research centres need and requirements.

4 To bringing online a robust, flexible distributed digital preservation network to preserve institutional repositories, government documents, databases, country specific open access content.

5 Looking for a Digital Preservation Model
Collaborative Solutions Build local collections for access Install affordable open source software Preserve via distributed preservation network Restore library core mission Digital heritage preserved for generations

6 Values The Brazilian libraries that work with our network hold these values: Preserve content vital for our institutions and country on our own soil Take responsibility, ensure long-term access Collaborate with a long-term, worldwide distributed solution Show leadership

7 Everything started ... With cooperating partners
Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia – IBICT Seven Brazilian public universities. Free membership of institutions. Stanford University LOCKSS Program Fundação de Ciência, Aplicações e Tecnologias Espaciais – FUNCATE Ministério de Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações – MCTIC With the insertion and storage of electronic journals on the LOCKSS platform of the partner institutions that have free access publications. First step trough the building of services to those institutions that have free access publications in Brazil.

8 CARINIANA Why LOCKSS

9 The importance of the LOCKSS Alliance
As distributed digital preservation solution, Stanford University's LOCKSS program meets the requirements mentioned in the OAIS reference model.

10 The importance of the LOCKSS Alliance
The establishment of an architecture of collaborative sub-networks for the treatment and preservation of electronic technical-scientific publications.

11 CARINIANA How it has worked

12 The Brazilian Network Services
Rede Cariniana 10 nodes 772 journals preserved (425 in process) 8,236 volumes preserved (4,774 in process) 165 institutes with titles preserved (83 in process) IBICT USP UNICAMP UFG USM UFPB UFBA UFRN UFRGS UnB With the establishment of a national network using LOCKSS, the steps we are taking have been established in our governance policies. The technical cooperation agreements established for OJS journals are being repeated allowing collaboration in content preservation services in DSpace, Archivematica and Dataverse. The Cariniana staff consists of 27 people, only 2 are full time, 15 are civil servants from the partner institutions. The archive's dimensions: 282 GB for 772 open access journals, for 13,327 Archival Units archived. All archived electronic journals use OJS as a platform. The institutions served by the network are 165 universities and Brazilian research centers. We have still 425 OJS journals in process and 83 from 22 institutions waiting to be included. Th.

13 The Brazilian Network Services
A system in a decentralized architecture. Long-term preservation of Brazilian scientific publications, concerns open access periodicals published in Brazil. Archive of the doctoral theses. Archive, catalog and preservation of research data. Financed by the Brazilian Government and in particular by the MCTI (Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia and Inovação). The MCTI gave resources to IBICT from

14 The Brazilian Network Services
A Private LOCKSS Network The first in Latin America Cariniana staff consists of 27 people, only 2 are full time, 15 are civil servants from the partner institutions The network is starting to write plugins autonomously

15 And started ingesting and preserving large data sets

16 Interoperability

17 CARINIANA Lessons learned

18 The organizational aspects of digital preservation
Network services and products are oriented to ensure that the different agents and scientific information producers in Brazil safeguard responsibly, following certification of international standards and auditing, access to national heritage records arising from scientific practices.

19 The organizational aspects of digital preservation
Cariniana Network was recognized by the International ISSN and the University of Edinburgh as an Electronic Publications Archive International Agency registered at The Keepers Registry, maintained by these organs because of the significant scientific and cultural contributions of preserved content, as well as the collaborative research activities.

20 Challenges To preserve in national territory
Participation on colaborative projects More Tools integration Encouraging local initiatives Financial support...
