1 Talk For Writing at Woburn Lower School

2 When, Why, What? To write it you must first be able to speak it!
Introduced in September 2016 Lots of good practice teaching writing at Woburn but it was becoming stale and needed a fresh approach Talk for Writing is a concept introduced by Pie Corbett and is based on the principles of how children learn To write it you must first be able to speak it!

3 Imitation Innovation Independence
The main principles Based on good quality texts Covers different genre types (fiction, instructions, non chronological reports, recounts, persuasive writing etc) Can be used across the curriculum Start with what do we already know – Cold Write What has this told us? What do we need to learn? Learn a piece of text, absorb the language Build up to the final, improved piece of writing – Hot Write Imitation Innovation Independence

4 How it works at Woburn Not a scheme – a way or working
Adapted to suit our needs e.g. less time learning text Adapted by key stage Follows ideas and principles laid out in previous slide One cold write and one hot write per half term Lots of joint writing Grammar is reinforced and taught through this process Phonics and spelling are still taught discretely Texts used usually relate to topics

5 Stages of writing: Boxed up plan
Original Text annotated with genre characteristics Joint writing Text map to help learn the text

6 Outcomes - Higher quality evidence for assessment and moderation
Pupils - Increased confidence with vocabulary and genre types Teachers – Clearer idea of what to teach Impact Well above national average writing results at KS1 and Year 4. Fulbrook say our writing is the best amongst the local lower schools!
