1 Path to BEER upgrades STAP meeting – Phase 2

2 ESS proposed upgrade evaluation plan
FoM = (Counting Rate Gain Factor x Science Capability) / SQRT(Disruption x Cost) Counting Rate Gain Factor: gain factor compared to day - one version, scaled by how large a fraction of experiments make use of the upgrade Science Capability: scientific impact of the upgraded configuration, ranked from 1 (low) to 5 (high) Disruption to User Programme: Ranked from 1 (low) to 5 (high) Cost: The cost in M€ of the upgrade, rounded up to 1 for upgrades which cost less than 1 M€ Cut-off FoM is about 1.5 STAP advice about the input metrics to the FoM calculation

3 BEER upgrades list Multiplexing and resolution-enhancing choppers
Sample movement system, focusing guide, etc. Detectors: doubling the area and adding backscattering bank Texture detectors SANS option including modulation chopper Total cost of all upgrades 9.3 M€

4 BEER upgrades list with FoM
Cost breakdown (M€) Counting Rate GF Science Capability Disruption Cost FoM Multiplexing and resolution-enhancing choppers 0.75 1.50 2.00 3 1.00 1.73 Sample movement system, focusing guide, etc. 1.14 2 1.49 Detectors: doubling the area and adding backscattering bank 3.11 2.50 1 2.13 Texture detectors 2.64 1.54 SANS option including modulation chopper 1.66 3.00 4 1.16

5 Multiplexing & resolution-enhancing choppers
Cost breakdown (M€) Counting Rate GF Science Capability Disruption Cost FoM 0.75 1.50 2.00 3 1.00 1.73 3rd pulse chapping chopper Enable the high flux option which triple the flux on the sample Increase the versatility of the instrument – more options for resolution setup Allow to fast in-situ measurement 3rd and 4th phase selection choppers Increase versatility of the instrument – enable pulse suppression (double wavelength band) and alternate frame (different wavelength ranges) modes 2nd modulation chopper Advanced modulation mode setting – tuneable multiplication factor All positions ready for the installation by the time of construction – low disruption when installed as soon as possible

6 Detectors – doubling the area
Cost breakdown (M€) Counting Rate GF Science Capability Disruption Cost FoM 3.11 2.50 1.50 1 2.13 Adding two additional detectors (1x1 m2) at 50° and 130° Increase the detection are for in-situ phase transformation measurement Access to the wider d-range (big unit cell – 50°, higher resolution – 130°) Adding of backscattering detector (0.5x0.5 m2) High resolution data for in-situ multi-phase system analysis Cave ready for installation by the time of construction

7 Texture detectors Cost breakdown (M€) Counting Rate GF Science Capability Disruption Cost FoM 2.64 1.00 2.50 1 1.54 Adding three 0.5x0.5 m2 off-plane detectors at 1 m distance Increase of detector off-plane coverage for texture analysis without rotation Detectors frames are designed for future arc holding – small disruption

8 Sample movement system, focusing guide, …
Cost breakdown (M€) Counting Rate GF Science Capability Disruption Cost FoM 1.14 1.50 2 1.49 Adding horizontal focusing guide before the sample Increase the flux by factor of three – but with high divergence Exchangeable lift installed by the time of construction Enhanced sample positioning system Adding the heavy z-axis table in the sample tower Increase the range of the sample positioning system for ±25 cm in x, y direction Laser tracking system for enhanced robot positioning Sample tower design for smooth reassemble is crucial

9 SANS option Installation of the 3rd modulation chopper
Cost breakdown (M€) Counting Rate GF Science Capability Disruption Cost FoM 1.66 1.00 3.00 4 1.16 Installation of the 3rd modulation chopper Enable the usage of one pulse for SANS and one for modulated diffraction – alternating frame mode Installation of the SANS detector Enable quasi-simultaneous measurement of in-situ SANS and diffraction Increase the versatility of the instrument – opening of the new science Cave is ready for adoption SANS tube, disruption is mainly due to the modulation chopper installation in bunker area
