3 The Beginnings PNC serves the underserved through:
Acute and Chronic Care - (Medical, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, etc.) Specialty Care (Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Audiology, etc.) PNC provides free-of-charge primary care services to the underserved and underprivileged and is equipped with a pharmacy, electronic medical record, and many other specialty services. Each year more than 375 healthcare students volunteer their time to providing high-quality care to over 1000 patients. Many of our past volunteers are now practicing health professionals in the Twin Cities and often return to PNC as a volunteer preceptor and educator. Quality Improvement as a structured part of the organization has only been around for 2 years. We are on our third year. Quality Improvement is a recent addition! Importance of QI QI Team Structure Project Example Q & A

4 QI Basics Why: Increase quality of care delivered
How: Project teams identify areas of opportunity When: Meet in the Fall, Identify the problem, collect data, present solutions in February What: Focus on patient experience, operations, cost savings, engagement, etc Why: improve the quality of care delivered in the clinic and create an opportunity for student volunteers to problem solve complex clinical issues together. How: Identifying opportunities for improvement in the clinic and forming multidisciplinary student project teams to address these needs. What: The projects are usually focused on critical components of PNC such as patient experience, clinic operations, cost savings, or volunteer engagement. When: Each fall the QI board member begins to recruit volunteers that will serve on various teams. The teams are selected with team leaders by mid October. They have until February to research and create solutions to a complex clinic issue. At the end of February each team presents to the clinic board and begins implementation. This year the Quality Improvement program has 20+ volunteers with pharmacy, medicine, nursing, physical therapy, and healthcare administration disciplines. These volunteers are organized into teams of 4 with a project manager, QI coordinator, and a QI executive board member. They are provided with a project idea and given 7 months to research, collect data, formulate solutions, and implement their solutions.
