6 Vallee on The Dangers of UFOs
Vallee: ... Get involved with the people as human beings. And then you have to become part of the scene, getting as close as you can to what's happening especially if it continues to happen. Clark: Are you suggesting that the investigator should attempt to experience the phenomenon himself? Vallee: Yes, I think that's sound scientific practice. Clark: But isn't that rather dangerous - in the sense that there's a real risk the investigator, even if he is emotionally stable and intellectually sophisticated, might be overwhelmed by the experiences involved? Vallee: Yes, there are dangers. Witness what happened to Morris Jessup or to Jim McDonald. But I think that now we're more aware of what the dangers are. Once you realize the phenomenon may be deliberately misleading, then you can use certain safeguards. I'm not saying that safeguards are always going to work. There is an element of danger you really can't avoid. There's no way to do that kind of study just by reading books. It's a little bit like the study of volcanoes. You can learn a lot about them by watching them from a distance but you certainly learn a lot more when you can be right there - even if it's somewhat risky. - Fate magazine interview by Jerry Clark in 1978

7 UFOs as Teaching Mechanism
"To me this [UFO] phenomenon is not simply something that should be investigated, it is a psychological test: the first great collective intelligence test to which mankind has been subjected. The sightings put into question both the structure of our society and the laws of our physics. Naturally we are free to run away from this test, as our scientists are currently doing.“ - Forbidden Science: Journals "By denying the reality of the reports, brushing aside the witnesses... and treating them like fools or crooks, the academic skeptics are actually teaching the public that science is impotent at studying the phenomenon.“ Interview upon reprint of Messengers of Deception

8 UFOs as Teaching Mechanism
Brad Steiger’s “Reality Game theory” “The various "children of the night". . . may be peculiar elements in a teaching game, which a Higher Intelligence is utilizing to gradually alter our concepts of reality. It may be that mankind has been invited to participate in a bizarre kind of contest with some undeclared cosmic opponents. Man may have been challenged to play the Reality Game; and if he can once apprehend the true significance of the preposterous clues, if he can but master the proper moves, he may obtain a clearer picture of his role in the cosmic scheme of things. The rules of the Reality Game may be confusing, extremely flexible and difficult to define, but play man must-for it is the only game in the Universe. Brad Steiger In the teasing fashion of a Zen riddle or a Sufi joke, I theorize a Higher Intelligence may use such highly improbable teaching aides as monster sightings to provoke us into a higher consciousness-and a much broader view of reality.” – Brad Steiger

9 Forteans & Anomalists Charles Fort – First UFOlogist
“We shall pick up an existence by its frogs. Wise men have tried other ways. They have tried to understand our state of being, by grasping at its stars, or its arts, or its economics. But, if there is an underlying oneness of all things, it does not matter where we begin, whether with stars, or laws of supply and demand, or frogs, or Napoleon Bonaparte. One measures a circle, beginning anywhere.” - Lo! Charles Fort (1874 – 1932)

10 Anomalistics & Zetetics
Anomalistics coined by anthropologist Roger Wescott in 1973 “…is also interdisciplinary in that it seeks an understanding of scientific adjudication across disciplines. This often involves not only the physical and social sciences, but also the philosophy of science. Anomalists search for patterns in the acceptance and rejection of new scientific ideas, and this may involve the history, sociology, and psychology of science as well as the scientific fields themselves. Marcello Truzzi ( ) Anomalistics is primarily concerned with the claims of protoscientists, for they seek entry into the scientific community and agree to play by the rules of scientific method. Perhaps the most advanced of the protosciences is parapsychology since it, unlike cryptozoology or ufology has obtained an affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science.” - Marcello Truzzi, Center for Scientific Anomalies Research

11 “It involves the belief that many, if not all, apparent realities are only social constructs, as they are subject to change inherent to time and place … it holds realities to be plural and relative, and dependent on who the interested parties are and what their interests consist of. It upholds the belief that there is no absolute truth and the way in which different people perceive the world is subjective.” – Wikipedia.org Other Informational Approaches: Systems Theory, Holistic, CyberBiological Symbolic, Folkloric, Mythic Parapsychological, Anthropological, and more…

12 Have they always been with us?

13 Dangers of Close Encounters
The Cash-Landrum Encounter Betty Cash, Vickie and Colby Landrum (Vickie's 7-year-old grandson) were driving home to Dayton, Texas on December 29, Witnessed flaming UFO and multiple military helicopters. Suffered health effects. Contacted their U.S. Senators, Lloyd Bentsen and John Tower. Filed a complaint with the Judge Advocate Claims office at Bergstrom Air Force Base. With attorney Peter Gersten they sued the U.S government for $20 million. U.S. District Court judge dismissed their case having not proved that the helicopters were associated with the U.S. Government.

14 FEMA Firefighters Guide
Chapter 13: Enemy Attack and UFO Potential WARNING: "Near approaches of UFOs can be harmful to human beings. Do not stand under a UFO that is hovering at low altitude. Do not touch or attempt to touch a UFO that has landed. In either case the safe thing to do is to get away from there very quickly and let the military take over. There is a possibility of radiation danger and there are known cases where persons have been burned by rays emanating from UFOs. Don't take chances with UFOs!“ … Besides the possible physical effects of approaching a UFO, e.g.. burns, radiation, etc., there may be psychological effects produced by force fields that could induce a hypnotic state in the viewer, loss of consciousness, memory relapse, and submission to the occupants. Jacques Vallee, author of "The Invisible College" cautions that we should consider psychic effects, such as space-time distortions experienced by percipients of craft-like devices which appear to fade away--dematerialize--and then reappear; of alien, strange voices or thoughts that may effect involuntary changes in the manner in which witnesses may react in such circumstances.

17 Jerome Clark: Experience Anomalies
“When we're dealing with centuries' worth of extraordinary claims, one thing we ought to have been able to figure out by now is that simplistic categories of "real" and "unreal" do not always apply. … That's why "liminality" is in the vocabulary, at least of scholars. That's why insistence on literal either/or readings has led to centuries of failed debate. … let me cite again these words from a recent interview with religious-studies scholar Jeffrey Kripal, who doesn't use my phrase "experience anomalies" but is speaking of the same: 2008 Dinsdale Award Winner "I am saying that you cannot read genuine paranormal events as simply subjective occurrences, as 'anecdotes' … but neither can you read them as stable, predictable, replicable, measurable things 'out there,' unrelated to subjective states of consciousness. They are both subjective and objective. Or, if you prefer, they are neither." If we don't develop new ways of thinking about this particular category of extraordinary human experience, we'll be spinning our wheels forever.” - UFO UpDates eList

18 Fantasy & Hallucination?
Confabulation & False Memory Syndrome “ … the process where a memory is remembered falsely. … people genuinely believe their false memory, despite evidence contradicting its truthfulness.” Fantasy Prone Personality Disorder of psychologists Sheryl Wilson and Theodore Barber “Fantasy prone personality (FPP) is a disposition or personality trait in which a person experiences an extensive and deep involvement in fantasy. An individual with this trait (termed a fantasizer) may have difficulty differentiating between fantasy and reality and may experience hallucinations and out-of-body experiences, as well as self-suggested psychosomatic symptoms.” Highly Hypnotizable, History of Childhood Abuse, Hysterical / False Pregnancies Psychological Inquiry, 1996, Vol. 7 Issue 2 Liminality “ … is a psychological, neurological, or metaphysical subjective state, conscious or unconscious, of being on the "threshold" of or between two different existential planes, as defined in neurological psychology (a "liminal state") and in the anthropological theories of ritual by such writers as Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner. As developed by van Gennep (and later Turner), the term is used to “refer to in-between situations and conditions that are characterized by the dislocation of established structures, the reversal of hierarchies, and uncertainty regarding the continuity of tradition and future outcomes.” Birth Trauma Hypothesis of Alvin Lawson ( ) Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and neurologist Norman Geschwind (1926–1984)

19 Cognitive Dissonance UFOlogical origins …
“Cognitive dissonance is a discomfort caused by holding conflicting ideas simultaneously. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance. They do this by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and actions. Dissonance is also reduced by justifying, blaming, and denying. The phrase was coined by Leon Festinger in his 1956 book When Prophecy Fails, which chronicled the followers of a UFO cult as reality clashed with their fervent beliefs. It is one of the most influential and extensively studied theories in social psychology.” - Wikipedia.org

20 Folie à deux / Mass Hysteria
“Folie à deux, from the French for "a madness shared by two" (or shared psychosis) is a psychiatric syndrome in which symptoms of a delusional belief are transmitted from one individual to another. The same syndrome shared by more than two people may be called folie à trois, folie à quatre, folie en famille or even folie à plusieurs ("madness of many"). Recent psychiatric classifications refer to the syndrome as shared psychotic disorder (DSM-IV) (297.3) and induced delusional disorder (F.24) in the ICD-10, although the research literature largely uses the original name. The disorder was first conceptualized in 19th century French psychiatry. Related phenomena: Reports have stated that a similar phenomenon to folie à deux had been induced by the military incapacitating agent BZ in the late 60s, and most recently again by anthropologists in the South American rainforest consuming the hallucinogen ayahuasca (Metzner, 1999).” – Wikipedia.org

21 Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Neurotheology and Paranormal Experience
“The first researcher to note and catalog the abnormal experiences associated with TLE was neurologist Norman Geschwind, who noted a constellation of symptoms, including hypergraphia, hyperreligiosity, fainting spells, and pedantism, often collectively ascribed to a condition known as Geschwind syndrome. Cognitive neuroscience researcher Michael Persinger asserts that stimulating the temporal lobe electromagnetically can cause TLE and trigger hallucinations of apparent paranormal phenomena such as ghosts and UFOs. Neurotheologians speculate that individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy, having a natural tendency to experience states of consciousness such as euphoria or samādhi, have functioned in human history as religious figures or shamans.” – Wikipedia.org Michael Persinger Laurentian University

22 Doorway Amnesia “Doorway Amnesia was discovered by Dr Eddie Bullard in his analysis of hundreds of abductions. I can confirm that it is a significant feature of British cases I have dealt with. Indeed it is easily the most consistent feature of them - present in over 95% of the cases I have dealt with. Similar levels of prevalence seem present elsewhere. It is critical for many reasons. Firstly it gives a test of the imagination hypothesis - something I tested for the MIT symposium. Here it was found that people asked to fantasize an abduction described this moment of capture nearly as often as real abductees do not describe it. They conjured up imaginative scenes of being led up a ramp into a spaceship, possibly coerced by … or at the point of a ray gun. Such things happen in reality very rarely indeed.” Jenny Randles - UFO UpDates eList Jenny Randles

24 Terence McKenna, DMT & The Elves of Hyperspace
"I think this alien intelligence is something so bizarre that it actually masquerades as an extraterrestrial so as not to alarm us by the true implications.” - The Archaic Revival: Speculations on Psychedelic Mushrooms, the Amazon, Virtual Reality, UFOs, Evolution, Shamanism, the Rebirth of the Goddess, and the End of History

25 Psychedelic Shamanism
Terence McKenna’s Psilocybin / DMT Hypotheses within his book True Hallucinations (1994) “Is it not possible that we human beings are occasionally susceptible to a kind of visionary seizure? ... Whatever its cause, our conditioning as individuals causes the experience to plunge us into a numinous scenario that reflects the deepest concerns and yearnings of the current culture toward the Other. ... If my suggestion regarding DMT were found to be correct, it would provide insight into the way in which the cultural feedback thermostat explanation of UFOs put forth by Vallee and others actually works. Those people who experience the DMT seizure and are plunged into the current myth of the Other actually return as apostles of that myth, able to clarify and refine it, and by those means to exert the tuning and control of historical development that may be the purpose of the agency behind the UFOs."

26 Newly Released Documentary
DMT – Spirit Molecule? “Rick Strassman MD performed the first new human studies with psychedelic drugs in the US in over 20 years. His research involved the powerful naturally-occurring compound, DMT – N,N-dimethyltryptamine. Led to this substance through his earlier study of the pineal gland as a potential biological locus for spiritual experiences, he administered several hundred doses of DMT to approximately 60 volunteers between 1990 and He wrote about this research in the popular book, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, now in its 15th printing. With three distinguished collaborators, he co-authored Inner Paths to Outer Space, which looks more carefully at the common "other worlds" experience that volunteers frequently reported during his research.” - RickStrassman.com Newly Released Documentary TheSpiritMolocule.com Rick Strassman

27 Aldous Huxley: Mind-at-Large
“Psychedelic drugs are thought to disable filters which block or suppress signals related to mundane functions from reaching the conscious mind. In this book, Huxley explores the idea that the human mind filters reality, partly because handling the details of all of the impressions and images coming in would be unbearable, partly because it has been taught to do so. He believes that psychotropic drugs can partly remove this filter, which leaves the drug user exposed to Mind at Large.” Aldous Huxley (1894 – 1963) The Doors of Perception: “Each person is at each moment capable of remembering all that has ever happened to him and of perceiving everything that is happening everywhere in the universe. The function of the brain and nervous system is to protect us from being overwhelmed and confused by this mass of largely useless and irrelevant knowledge, by shutting out most of what we should otherwise perceive or remember at any moment, and leaving only that very small and special selection which is likely to be practically useful. According to such a theory, each one of us is potentially Mind at Large.” – Wikipedia.org

28 Carl Jung: Synchronicity, Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious
“My thesis then, is as follows: in addition to our immediate consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature and which we believe to be the only empirical psyche (even if we tack on the personal unconscious as an appendix), there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually but is inherited. It consists of pre-existent forms, the archetypes, which can only become conscious secondarily and which give definite form to certain psychic contents.” - Carl Jung Carl Gustav Jung (1875 – 1961) “Is the mechanism of UFO apparitions, then, an invariant in all cultures ? Are we faced here with something more than a projection of Jung's archetypal images, a psychic technology whose applications know few if any limitations in space and in time? I see no better hypothesis - at this point of our knowledge of UFO phenomena.” - Jacques Vallee

29 Archetypes of the Unconscious

30 Carl Jung: Synchronicity, Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious
“Jung was at great pains, without passing judgment on the reality of the saucers, of the things seen, to interpret them psychologically, to interpret them as one would interpret a dream. He saw in their circular form, in their scintillating, shining, alchemical brilliance, a symbol of human wholeness, and felt that they were a symbol of our collective yearning for a kind of totality and individuation. Now, in a way this kind of explanation is very satisfying; however, it is not satisfying to the person who has immediately undergone a very strange and a very real seeming experience. Terence McKenna (1946 – 2000) Jung in Mysterium Coniunctionis is at great pains to say that the realm of the psychic and the realm of the physical meet in a strange kind of never-never land that we have yet to create the intellectual tools to explore. This is where the mystery of synchronicity is going to come to rest, the mystery of all kinds of paranormal activity on the part of human beings, and the mystery of the flying saucer.” - Terence McKenna

31 The Imaginal & Mythic Mind
“In dealing with things of the imaginal realm, we are not talking about the stuff of fantasy or even of imagination, as these terms are generally understood today. Specifically, we are not concerned here with fictive matters or with what is "made up" through creative invention... The imaginal realm is not only ontologically real; it is also a world that has form, dimension, and, most important for us, persons.... The imaginal realm is a self-existent world... it is accessible through altered states of consciousness... it is populated by ontologically real personified beings; and... it interacts with the everyday material world, albeit often in ways that defy rational understanding.” Kenneth Ring - Kenneth Ring "Toward an Imaginal Interpretation of 'UFO Abductions'" Revision, Vol. 11, No. 4

32 Dr. Gregory L. Little – “Materialized Archetypal Splinters”
Carl Jung: Synchronicity, Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious Dr. Gregory L. Little – “Materialized Archetypal Splinters” “Synchronicity is a special condition of awareness that results from energization of the mandala archetype.” “Human dilemma" of our tech outpacing our ability to control it Jung: Archetypes independent, autonomous entities with will of their own Trickster archetype within the Mothman flap Keel's 8th-Tower and human automatons tuned into evil field Synchronistic phenomena include the UFO haystack and parapsychological manifestations and are the root energetics of all paranormal phenomena

34 The Trickster Archetype
"The pookah takes many forms, but is most famous when he appears as a giant, six-foot white rabbit - which is the form most Americans know from the play and film, Harvey. Whatever form the pookah takes, he retains the special ability of his species, which is like that of Thoth in Egyptian legend, Coyote in Native American myth or Hanuman the Divine Monkey in Hindu lore - he can move us from one universe, or Belief System, into another, and he likes to play games with our ideas about ‘reality.’” - Robert Anton Wilson in Cosmic Trigger Vol 2 Jimmy Stewart in Harvey

35 Lucid Dreaming, False Awakenings, OBEs, NDEs and UFOs
“The one positive benefit of false awakenings is that they can sometimes be used to induce out-of-body experiences (OBEs). Indeed, Oliver Fox (1962) recommends this as a method for achieving the OBE. For many people OBEs and lucid dreams are practically indistinguishable. If you dream of leaving your body, the experience is much the same. Also recent research suggests that the same people tend to have both lucid dreams and OBEs (Blackmore 1988; Irwin 1988). All of these experiences have something in common. In all of them the "real" world has been replaced by some kind of imaginary replica. Celia Green, of the Institute of Psychophysical Research at Oxford, refers to all such states as "metachoric experiences." Jayne Gackenbach, a psychologist from the University of Alberta, Canada, relates these experiences to UFO abduction stories and near-death experiences (NDEs). The UFO abductions are the most bizarre but are similar in that they too involve the replacement of the perceived world by a hallucinatory replica. There is an important difference between lucid dreams and these other states. In the lucid dream one has insight into the state (in fact that defines it). In false awakening, one does not (again by definition). In typical OBEs, people think they have really left their bodies. In UFO "abductions" they believe the little green men are "really there"; and in NDEs, they are convinced they are rushing down a real tunnel toward a real light and into the next world. It is only in the lucid dream that one realizes it is a dream.” Lucid Dreaming: Awake in Your Sleep? Susan Blackmore Published in Skeptical Inquirer 1991, 15,

36 Oneironaut Alan Worsley
“I am not given to superstition or believing in "unnecessary entities" but perhaps the term "dream" is a little too bland to do justice to the ultra-realism of these experiences. For instance, if one "dreams," as I have, in rich tactile and auditory imagery of being examined in the dark by robots or operated upon by small beings whose good will and competence may be in doubt, or abused in various ways by life-forms not known to terrestrial biology, it can be very difficult to keep still… Alan Worsley I like to regard myself as at least a moderately intrepid investigator, but I have to admit that in spite of being intellectually of the opinion that what was happening was only internally generated imagery, I have flinched during these episodes on more than one occasion... I suspect that many "UFO abduction" experiences, as well as out-of-body-experiences are examples of the same kind of thing.”

37 Psychic Solution "[T]he phenomenon comes in an environment of manifestations that include heightened awareness of synchronicities, paranormal sounds and lights and occasionally absurd coincidences similar to those described in the poltergeist literature.“ – Jacques Vallee, 2008 interview

38 Parapsychological Theories
Alien Discussions: Proceedings of the Abduction Study Conference held at MIT, Cambridge, MA Possible Telepathic Spread of UFO Abduction Stories by Brian C. Thompson M.D. Worked with hypnosis on 60 abductees “Are hypnosis sessions enhancing a telepathic transfer of abduction scenarios from UFO investigators to abductees? … A concern is that, leading questions and verbal inferences aside, a non-abductee might have an abduction experience induced via hypnotic / telepathic rapport with a well-informed hypnotist. Not only does this possibility complicate UFO investigations, but it makes it all too easy to unwittingly plant unhealthy seeds in fertile imaginations.” … “Maimonides staff also observed that exotic forms of communication appearing in a dream seemed to signal that the dream itself was of a telepathic nature. In this sense, the prevalence of telepathic communication between aliens and humans during abduction experiences hints at telepathic origins.”

39 Jenny Randles on Hypnosis
“The evidence of psychology – at least as I read it – is at best split and I find biased against hypnosis being used as a way to uncover even say a 75% truth level. So – if we accept that 25% of all abduction testimony is fantasy then which bits do we use to construct our ongoing theories and worldviews? Especially as these feed back into the collective unconscious and inevitably create false data in the next generation of abductees? Jenny Randles Even if some true memory is emerging – and I suspect it is, by the way – the constant over use of hypnosis is simply diluting the level of truth in the cases that emerge by adding in more and more fantasy. By now I suspect the data emerging is so contaminated that it is dangerous to make any real assumptions from it.”
