1 Environmental Country Profiles to inform Shelter & Settlement programming
October 2018 IFRC. Victor Lacken. A man carries a pile of wood in Balukhali camp, Bangladesh. The camp houses people who have fled violence in neighbouring Rakhine State, Myanmar

2 Objective To inform environmentally sustainable shelter programming by making key information about environmental considerations, impacts, concerns and opportunities relevant to shelter and settlements programming available and accessible to practitioners as a preparedness measure Port au Prince, Haiti. Credit: Amanda George, 2010

3 Content 3 - 5 countries where IFRC/NS is lead of the Shelter Cluster
First selected: Bangladesh and Vanuatu Information on the selected contexts relevant to shelter programming including: Ecosystems and protected areas Environmental degradation and climate change risks Legal frameworks/laws/regulations Natural resource practices Shelter building practices and materials Resources and local contacts Sudan. Worsened environmental impacts due to bad choice of camp location. Credit: UN Environment

4 Request for inputs Types of content to include: Based on your experience, what information would have been useful to you in previous shelter operations? What info was missing related to environmental decision making? Specific expertise on Bangladesh and Vanuatu: Do you have country specific resources or expertise to share?

5 Options for Structure By scale of intervention (Sphere Standards)
By humanitarian programme cycle By construction project cycle

6 Scale Macro level planning E.g. Settlement planning E.g.
Info on main hazards and risks Regulatory and social requirements Protected and ecologically sensitive areas Settlement planning E.g. Site selection, presence of toxic materials, proximity to hazards accessibility, fuel access Shelter design e.g. Building materials Software and technical support Household items PROS Fits with Sphere More operational / implementation friendly Coordination/implementation CONS Some overlap Too constrained in categorization? Some environmental subjects don’t fit into these categories

7 Programme cycle

8 Construction project cycle
Construction project cycle and material related intervention points - WWF Building Materials Green Guide
