1 A3 4.2a To Operate on Polynomials
A3 4.2a To Operate on Polynomials

2 To Add: Combine like terms (you can “stack” terms)
LESSON: 2x, 5x2, 8x5 – 13x3 + 4x – 9 are Polynomials As long as “x” is not in the denominator, it is OK To Add: Combine like terms (you can “stack” terms) (3x2 + 5x – 19) + (10x3 – 11x + 10)

3 To Subtract: Add the Opposite, then Combine like terms
(-4x2 + 6x – 8) – (15x2 – 13x + 20) (9x2 y5– 6xy – 2) – (5x2 y5 – 12xy + 10)

4 To Multiply: Every term from the first polynomial multiplies every term from the second polynomial. If it is only two terms with two terms, we “FOIL” it. (4x2 + 6) (5x2 –10) (5xy + 6) (5x3y2 – 8) How do you know the difference between addition, subtraction, and multiplication?

5 (8x5 – 13x3 + 4x ) (3x2 –7) (4ab2 + 10) (7a4 – b3 + 4ab – 9)
If there are more than two terms for either or both, we can still follow the logic of FOIL, but expand it. (8x5 – 13x3 + 4x ) (3x2 –7) (4ab2 + 10) (7a4 – b3 + 4ab – 9)

6 To Divide (simple division): Divide the denominator into each term of the numerator

7 Active Learning Assignment: Operations of Polynomials Handout
Add : 1, 3, 5 Subtract: 7,9, 11 Multiply: 15, 17, 19, 23 Divide: 1, 3, 5
