1 Jumping from a Cart Competition sp 4, page 248
Created for CVCA Physics By Dick Heckathorn 12 Jan 2K + 5

2 The Challenge A competition is held between two teams of three 60-kg members each. The teams will take turns climbing onto the cart and jumping off. They want to see whose cart of mass 120-kg will be moved fastest when propelling it with a jump.

3 Team A will start at the left end of the cart that is free to roll without friction, run to the right and jump off with a velocity of 10 m/s with respect to the cart. One member of team B will start at the left end of the cart, run to the right and jump off with a velocity of 10 m/s followed by the second and then the third member.

4 What is the final velocity of the cart?
A 120-kg cart is at rest. Three 60-kg people run to the right and together jump off the cart at 10 m/s. What is the final velocity of the cart?

5 Let ‘V’ be the final velocity of the cart with respect to the earth.
Team A Three 60-kg people run to the right and together jump off the cart at 10 m/s. v = 10 m/s + V v = V Let ‘V’ be the final velocity of the cart with respect to the earth. Let ‘v’ be the final velocity of the three people with respect to the earth.

6 Team A v = v = 10 m/s + V V

7 Let ‘V1’ be the final velocity of the cart with respect to the earth.
Team B v1 = v1 = 10 m/s + V1 V1 Let ‘v1’ be the final velocity of the first student with respect to the earth. Let ‘V1’ be the final velocity of the cart with respect to the earth.

8 Team B v1 = 10 m/s + V1 v1 = V1

9 Let ‘V2’ be the final velocity of the cart with respect to the earth.
Team B v2 = 10 m/s + V2 v2 = V2 v1 = 8 m/s Let ‘V2’ be the final velocity of the cart with respect to the earth. Let ‘v2’ be the final velocity of the second student with respect to the earth.

10 Team B v2 = 10 m/s + V2 V2 v1 = 8 m/s

11 Let ‘V3’ be the final velocity of the cart with respect to the earth.
Team B v3 = 10 m/s + V3 v3 = V3 Let ‘V3’ be the final velocity of the cart with respect to the earth. Let ‘v3’ be the final velocity of the third student with respect to the earth.

12 Team B v3 = 10 m/s + V3 v2=5.5 m/s v1=8 m/s V3

13 That’s all folks!
