1 Bell Work For problem #1 state the 2 roots of the number, and problem #2 Estimate the value of the radical to the nearest 10th…

2 Roots (Day 2) Lesson #8 Pg. 231

3 What You’ll Learn in Lesson #8
Finding the square roots of perfect squares Finding the cube roots of perfect cubes Solving equations involving squares and cubes

4 Square Roots A square root of a number is one of its two equal factors
Example 52 = 25, so 5 is the square root of 25 The radical symbol , is used to represent square roots. Positive real numbers have two square roots. 4  4 = 42 = 16 =+ 4 Positive square root of 16 Negative square root of 16 (–4)(–4) = (–4)2 = 16 = – 4

5 Perfect Squares The positive square root is represented by The negative square root is represented by – The positive and negative is represented by ± A perfect square is a number whose positive square root is a whole number. Some examples of perfect squares are shown in the table. 1 4 9 16 25 36 49 64 81 100 12 22 32 42 52 62 72 82 92 102 121 144 169 196 225 256 289 324 361 400 112 122 132 142 152 162 172 182 192 202

6 Solving Examples

7 Cube Roots A cube root of a number is one of it’s three equal factors
Be careful, you can find the cube root of a negative under the radical Numbers such as 8, 27, and 64 are perfect cubes because they are the cubes of integers
