1
Organization of the Nervous System
3
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain and spinal cord Directs the Activity of the entire nervous system. Protected by the skull and spine.
4
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Cranial nerves that that transmit information to and from the brain and spinal nerves that transmit information to and from the spinal cord. Includes specialized nerve endings called sensory receptors that respond to stimuli such as pressure, pain, and temperature.
5
Afferent and Efferent Nerves
Afferent (Sensory) Nerves send signals from sensory receptors to the CNS. Afferent = how are we affected by the stimuli. Efferent (Motor) Nerves carry information from the CNS to the rest of the body. Efferent = signals the body to produce effort.
6
Autonomic and Somatic Nervous System.
Autonomic Nervous System, controls all involuntary functions. ie. heart rate, digestion. Autonomic = automatic functions. Somatic Nervous System, stimulates our skeletal muscles to produce movement. It is voluntary, and controlled consciously.
7
