XVII Regional Conference on Migration Panama City, Panama June 19-22, 2012

2 Irregular Migration - Overview of 2011 Statistics
The number of refugee claims in 2011 increased by 9.5% after decreasing for two consecutive years in 2009 and 2010. Hungary was responsible for nearly 18% of all refugee claims. Refugee claims from visa-exempt countries, especially Hungary, the Slovak Republic, Croatia, and Poland, continue to rise. There was an increase in Improperly Documented Arrivals (IDAs) at Canadian airports resulting from an increase in the number of foreign nationals without the proper visa to enter/transit. The number of IDAs that made a refugee claim in 2011 decreased (as compared to 2010).
