1
An introduction to Gamma Rays and its use today!
2
Gamma Rays- wavelength and frequency
Gamma rays have the shortest wavelength of the spectrum They also have the highest frequency Wavelength < 10^-11 m Frequency > 10^19 Hz
3
Gamma rays- “everyday uses”
Radio-therapy Book conservation- kill mold and fungi Gamma ray bursts (from stars) Food irradiation Gamma ray astronomy Radioactive tracers Find cracks in pipes and aircraft
4
Gamma ray bursts Gamma rays have the highest frequency and therefore the highest energy of the entire EM spectrum Gamma ray bursts are bursts of gamma rays that last from a few milliseconds to a few hundred seconds.
5
Gamma ray busts (cont.) They can release more energy in 10 seconds than the sun will emit in a lifetime of one billion years. Thought to be the result of exploding supernovas (a type of star)
