2 Nervous Tissue 2 properties that are characteristic of nervous tissue:
Conductivity - can transmit electrical signals along an axon Excitability - can generate an action potential in response to a stimulus 2 types of cells: Neurons Neuroglia

3 Neurons Electrical signals travel along the axon (conductivity)
Dendrites receive signals, cell body generates an electrical impulse called an action potential (excitability)

4 Neuroglia Not neurons Support and maintain neurons
Example: Schwann cells (peripheral nervous system) ...many more types… page 242 if interested :)

5 Membranes Simplest combinations of tissues that form a functional unit
Include connective and epithelial tissues (most of the time) Contains other structures like: blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerves Provide support and protection for body structures that transport substances throughout the body: Divide areas of the body/organs Line inside of hollow organs/body cavities Anchor organs to other structures

6 Types of Membranes Cutaneous membranes * Serous membranes *
Mucous membranes * Synovial membranes * called epithelial membranes - contain a layer of epithelial cells and are associated with a connective tissue)

7 Cutaneous Membrane The skin
The skin is the largest organ in your body and is the primary organ of the integumentary system Epithelial tissue = stratified squamous of the epidermis Connective tissue = dermis (dense connective tissue proper)

8 Serous Membranes Line internal surfaces of the abdominopelvic and thoracic cavities Cover the organs within these cavities and bind them together Epithelial tissue secretes clear, watery fluid that serves as lubrication Examples: Pericardium Pleurae (X2) Peritoneum (lines abdominal cavity and covers abdominal organs)

9 Mucous Membranes Line internal walls of digestive, respiratory tracts
Line the ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and all organs of the reproductive tract Epithelial cells secrete mucus to either: a) trap foreign particles orb) maintain a moist environment or c) protect cells from harmful liquids (like stomach acid)

10 Synovial Membranes NOT Epithelial membranes
Line the inside walls of cavities around joints Examples: knee, elbow, and shoulder Made of loose connective tissue and small amount of fat Cells from the connective tissue secrete synovial fluid to lubricate the joint and nourish the cartilage on the end of the bones
