5 “The first objective for the terrestrial component of SEARCH is to systematically assess recent changes in the hydro-climatology of the pan-arctic landmass and terrestrial ecosystems… Finally, we must compare modern data against paleoclimate records” (SEARCH, 2001, p. 42)

6 We propose to address this objective in 3 ways:
1. Data rescue of Russian discharge records (digitizing of long-term daily records for 150 watersheds, and their incorporation into the R-ArcticNET hydrologic database) 2. Time-series analysis of these records (recession, spectral analyses) 3. Comparison of observed contemporary increase with discharge variations of the past years (tree-ring analysis)

7 1. Data rescue of Russian discharge records: R-ArcticNET:

8 (Shiklomanov, 2002)

9 2. Time-series analysis:
(Yenisei R. at Igarka)

10 3. Comparison of observed contemporary
(c) Saskatchewan River South Saskatchewan River (a) North Saskatchewan River 3. Comparison of observed contemporary increase with discharge variations of the past years: (Case et al., in press)

11 Tree ring data have already been collected
and are archived by NGDC: (International Tree Ring Data Bank, NOAA/NGDC)

12 Conclusions: forthcoming in 3 years! (Pur River, Siberia)
