2 Author’s Introduction
For homework, you were to read the introduction to the novel, written by Mary Shelley. With a partner, share the notes you took in response to the question: Does Mary Shelley accomplish her task? What in volume I contributes to the overall “horror” of the novel? Discuss

3 Gothic Romance With a partner, review what you know about Gothic Romance Note in your RJ elements that you have already seen used in Frankenstein With your partner, find examples from the book that fits the Gothic Romance elements you identified Be prepared to share out Discuss

4 What about the Romance? What makes a work a ‘romance’?
Look for character traits that Victor demonstrates or that have been shown in the novel so far.

5 Victor…romantic? Victor as a Romantic character?
On a quest to discover something great (dreamer) “No one can conceive the variety of feelings which bore me onwards, like a hurricane, in the first enthusiasm of success. Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through…. A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me” (Shelley, 55). Discuss other ways Victor fits into the “romantic” (yet doomed) character role

6 Homework Pay close attention to RJ Question #4 Trace the "light" and “dark” imagery in Volume 1 -- what are the connotations of "light" and “dark” at various points in the book?
