The Constitution The new Constitution was to replace the Articles of Confederation. 9 of the 13 states were needed for ratification. Constitution Articles

Federalists Favored ratification.
James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington. They stressed weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and the need for the Constitution.

Anti-federalists Opposed ratifying the Constitution.
Patrick Henry, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams. Objections: - Absence of God - Denial to states to print money - Federal government has too much power - Lack of Bill of Rights (no personal freedoms)

Federalist papers Very persuasive documents toward ratification.
Written by Hamilton, Madison, and John Jay.

Ratification After much debate the Constitution is ratified.
The Bill of Rights were added in 1791 – per request by the Anti-federalists prior to ratification.
