Interphase is the period in which the cell is not dividing
Interphase is the period in which the cell is not dividing. It is also the point where the cell spends the largest amount of time in during its life cycle. This does not mean that little is happening as interphases are very active periods during which cells perform all the functions necessary for life. Interphase is not a phase of mitosis but a stage in the life of a cell. Interphase (5-10 min.) This slide should be taught to students as direct instruction. Present information as you would like to see student presenting to their peers. Allow time for students to take notes.

Prophase Prophase is the first phase of mitosis, during prophase the nuclear membrane begins to dissolve and the cell's DNA (genetic information) is compacted into X-shaped chromosomes in order to allow for the division of genetic material.

Metaphase In the second phase of mitosis, the cell's chromosome pairs line up along the middle (equator) of the cell. This helps ensure that in the following phases each of the new nuclei will get a single copy of each chromosome.

Anaphase During anaphase, the third phase, each pair of chromosomes is separated into two identical, independent chromosomes which are then moved to opposite sides of the cell. This movement makes sure that each new nucleus receives a DNA copy. The nuclei are now ready to complete division and reform.

Telophase Telophase is the fourth phase, a new nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes, forming two new nuclei.

Cytokinesis Cytokinesis immediately follows the last phase of mitosis. And is more like a quick moment in the life of a cell. During cytokinesis cell division is completed and the rest of the organelles in the cell are divided. So the parent cell (aka the original cell) splits into two cells called daughter cells.
