1 Variation in Populations Tennessee SPI Objective:
Notes SPI Variation in Populations Science Tennessee SPI Objective: Analyze data on levels of variation within a population to make predictions about survival under particular environmental conditions. Essential Learning Students will predict which sub-group(s) in a population are best suited to survive under specific environmental conditions. Essential Question What is the connection between variation within a population and the sub-group(s) survival rate?

2 Variation in Populations
SPI Variation in Populations Notes Science Variation in Populations 1) Variation refers to a variety or diversity of traits (different kinds) within any given population of organisms. Example: Look around at the other students. Notice the unique traits that individuals have such as hair color, height, eye color, skin color, etc. This is an example of variation within the student population 2) Likewise variations occur in nature in populations of plants, animals, insects, fish, etc.

3 Variation in Populations
SPI Variation in Populations Notes Science Variation in Populations Look at the picture below of the 5 dogs. They all belong to the same species (Canis Familiaris). Notice the variety of traits (different kinds). This is an example of variation within a dog population Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark!

4 Variation in Populations
SPI Variation in Populations Notes Science 1) When environmental changes occur… organisms must change (adapt) by either changing their behavior or changing their body structure or both. 2) The process that drives variation… … is called natural selection 3) Changes and variation result from… …sexual reproduction (over many generations) and changes in the environment 4) Changes and variation also result from… …genetic mutations (over many generations) and changes in the environment

5 4 Phases of Natural Selection
