1 Physics and SI Units

2 What is physics? Slide 2

3 Physics Mechanics: motion and its causes, interaction between objects
Thermodynamics: heat and temperature Vibrations and waves: specific types of repetitive motion Optics: light Electromagnetism: electricity, magnetism and light Relativity: things moving at speeds close to the speed of light Quantum physics: behaviour of submicroscopic particles

4 The scientific method

5 Mathematics Check Can you do the following?

6 Le Système international d'unités
In English it’s called International System of Units There are 7 SI base units and each one describes a different dimension: The ones we will meet most are Kilogram (kg), metre (m) , second (s), Kelvin (K), Amperes (Amps / A)

7 Derived SI units Derived SI units are units which are made up of the base units An example is the Newton Using F=ma (derived from Newton’s 2nd law) 1N = 1kgms-2

8 Homework Read section 1 of your textbook p 4-9
Try to answer the questions but I won’t be accepting them in

9 Questions
