The Rock Cycle

What are we doing today? Objective
I can use observation, inference, and data collection skills describe the rock cycle. Standard Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process. Common Core Integrate quantitative information expressed in words with a version of that information expressed visually.

What is a Rock? A rock is a collection of minerals bound together.

Types of Rocks Sedimentary Igneous Metamorphic

Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rocks are formed by deposition of sediments on Earth’s surface or in water.

Igneous Rocks Igneous rocks are formed from magma or lava that has cooled or crystallized.

Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic rocks are formed by the process of heat, pressure, or chemical change.

The Rock Cycle The rock cycle is the process by which Earth materials change to form different kinds of rocks.

Ride the Rock Cycle! Let’s pretend you’re a rock! Start at one of the 8 stations around the room. Role the die and follow the journey! Record what happens on your journey chart.

Create your journey as a rock!
Create a comic strip story of your experiences from the journey through the rock cycle. Have fun!

The Rock Cycle deposition

Weathering Breaking down of large rocks into small particles by wind, water, or chemicals

Erosion Wearing away of rocks or soil by the action of water, ice, or wind

Lithification Conversion of loose sediment to solid rock

Deposition Sediment settling out of water or wind that is carrying it, and is moved to a new location
