2 An epic is a long, narrative poem the tells of the adventures, struggles and victories of a hero.

3 Epics are told in the oral tradition, that is they were not written but spoken, primarily because older epics were composed when there was no written language.

4 Epics were told/sung by scops = bards poetic storytellers usually over a period of several days

5 Repetition of words and phrases helped bards tell their stories.

6 Kennings are poetic synonyms or descriptive phrases which replace nouns to add imagery and flavor to the epic. “whale road” = ocean “death stick” = sword

The tone of the epic is serious. The plot involves supernatural beings and long, dangerous journeys.

11 The epic deals with universal themes, such as good vs
The epic deals with universal themes, such as good vs. evil, heroism, bravery and life and death. Universal themes are understood everywhere by many cultures.
