1 Key Question: What is meant by a change in state?
States of Matter Key Question: What is meant by a change in state?

2 What is a molecule? Molecule - The smallest particle of a compound that results in the properties of that compound.

3 What are the smallest particles of an element called?
Atom = smallest particle of an element that retains the properties of that element.

4 Atoms and molecules are always in motion.

5 Solid State In solids – atoms and molecules constantly vibrate but can not move from place to place Solids retain their shape and size

6 Liquid State Atoms and molecules gain enough kinetic energy to slide past each other but not enough to separate from each other Liquids have definite size but no definite shape of their own

7 Gas State Atoms and molecules gain enough kinetic energy to separate from one another Gas has no definite size or shape of it’s own but will separate evenly throughout a container.

8 Plasma Plasma is a hot ionized gas consisting of approximately equal numbers of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons.

9 Bose-Einstein condensate
A state of matter in which separate atoms or subatomic particles are cooled to near absolute zero (0 K, − °C, or − °F; K = kelvin). The atoms clump together and act as if they are a single atom. Also called superatom. This state of matter was predicted by Einstein in 1925 but not observed experimentally until 1995.

10 What is a change in state of matter?
When a substance changes state only the movement of the molecules change. There is no chemical reaction so the structure of the molecules does not change.
