1 Existentialism review

2 Definition a chiefly 20th century philosophical movement embracing diverse doctrines but centering on analysis of individual existence in an unfathomable universe and the plight of the individual who must assume ultimate responsibility for acts of free will without any certain knowledge of what is right or wrong or good or bad

3 origin A movement in twentieth-century literature (1920s and 1930s) and philosophy , with some forerunners in earlier centuries. Existentialism stresses that people are entirely free and therefore responsible for what they make of themselves. With this responsibility comes a profound anguish or dread. Starting in Germany, there are many men responsible for developing this philosophy. Jean-Paul Sartre is considered the father of Existentialism.

4 Three principles of existentialism
Existence precedes essence. At every moment, man is free. Man is a subject, not an object.

5 1. Existence precedes essence
Man exists first AND THEN defines his essence by choices he makes and his actions.

6 2. At every moment, man is free.
No external agents can influence an individual UNLESS he chooses to let them.

7 3. Man is a subject, not an object.
Every person is an individual and is unique.
