1 1. During the hard times of the great depression, Steven is discussion work with his boss. He is in for some bad news. 2. “As you well know Steve, times are very hard during this depression, and we have had to get rid of many people around here,” said Steven’s boss 3. Steven replies in a sad tone “Yes, my family and I are struggling during these times ever since our stocks have crashed. We’re hurting financially” 4. After hearing this, His boss sadly informs him: “Well I’m afraid I have more bad news for you, we’re going to have to let you go. I’m so sorry…you have until 3:00 pm to collect you things.”

2 5. “Oh no. What am I going to do now
5. “Oh no! What am I going to do now?” He thinks to him self as he walks home. As he gets home, his lovely wife greets him at the door. “Oh Steven, you’re home early, everything alright?” 6. Steven then has to give his wife the bad news, “yes dear, but I have some bad news, I lost my job today at the factory, they’re downsizing over half the company.” 7. They both sit in shock as their son enters the room. “Hi dad! You’re home early.” Then the bad news spreads to little Timothy. “Yes son, I lost my job today bud.” 8. But poor little Timothy doesn’t quite understand the situation. He responds with “That’s ok, you can always get a new one and you were always complaining about it anyways…right?”

3 9. “Let me explain something buddy, America is going through some rough times. We are in what’s known as a depression, and the stock market has completely crashed. Because of this jobs are hard to come by. Don’t worry though, I’m going to try very hard to find something and I am not going to stop until I do. “ 10. Steven’s son is a very generous person and shows it when he offers him family his own money. “You can have the money I make from selling newspaper at the stand in the mornings, it’s not much but it should help a little.” 11. His family all thinks this is very sweet when his mother replies “That is sweet of you Timothy, but we will find something, not to worry.” 12. Switching to himself, Steven says “I am not sure where to start to even look for a job, any suggestions?” Optimistically his wife replies “How about down at the meat packing plant, they must have openings, after all we all still need food to eat.”

4 13. Trying to switch the subject, Steven says “Ok, I’ll consider it, and start looking first thing tomorrow. For now, what’s for dinner? I’m starving.” 14. The next morning the father wakes up in a rather good mood. “Well good morning dear, breakfast smells great.” His wife has made a large batch of warm pancakes. “Yummy, pancakes! My favorite,” says Tim 15. Ready to start his job hunt, as he is leavening Steve says “Everything was great dear, thanks for breakfast, well I’m off to go find another career. Wish me luck!” as he kisses his wife goodbye 16. Both Tim and his wife have a good feeling about what is to come. “Good luck dad,” “Good luck dear, I’m sure you’ll find something, just remember to smile and stand up straight,” they both reply as he leave

5 17. Later that day Steve returns home with great news. “Hunny I’m home
17. Later that day Steve returns home with great news. “Hunny I’m home. And I have great news!” Wife responds, “What? What is it? Did you find a job?” 18. “I’ve gotten an interview with the construction company downtown!” “That’s great news dad!” Timothy responds. 19. “Yes, you’re old man is going to be the one building the tall buildings down! Isn’t that great!” Steven says boastfully. 20. Timothy says, not knowing that he wasn’t supposed to know about it,“Now we don’t have to sell the house and live in one of those ‘hoovervilles’ you’re always talking about!”
