2 Figure 1 Rates of hospitalizations among patients with Crohn’s disease from 1990 to Diamonds (♦) represent all hospitalizations, regardless of whether the principal diagnosis was Crohn’s disease. Squares (■) represent all hospitalization with a primary diagnosis of Crohn’s disease. Triangles (▵) represent all hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of Crohn’s disease that were a minimum of 2 days duration. There was a significant increase in per capita hospitalization rates for Crohn’s disease during the time period under study regardless of the criteria for inclusion (P < .001 for all comparisons). 3 Figure 2 Rates of hospitalizations among patients with ulcerative colitis from 1990 to Diamonds (♦) represent all hospitalizations, regardless of whether the principal diagnosis was ulcerative colitis. Squares (■) represent all hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. Triangles (▵) represent all hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of ulcerative colitis that were a minimum of 2 days duration. There was no significant increase in per capita hospitalizations for patients with a primary diagnosis of ulcerative colitis during the time period under study (P < .83). There was a small but statistically significant increase in rates of hospitalizations for patients with any ICD-9 diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (P = .02).
