2 One Overall Objective To develop an evaluate an international volunteer training programme to support patients dying in hospital and their families

4 Four Specific Objectives
Adapting and implementing the volunteer programme in five different countries Examining the effects of the programme on the experience of dying and quality of care as perceived by patients and family members Exploring the effect of the programme on care of dying patients and their family members as perceived by health care professionals and volunteers Identifying factors that influence the implementation and impact of a hospital volunteer service for dying patients

5 Nine Tasks Development of detailed protocols
Three-round international Delphi study to achieve consensus on training module content Preparing the infrastructure within the participating hospitals in each of the five countries Development of the Learning Lab – virtual forum for Volunteer Co-ordinators (VCs) from each country

6 Nine Tasks Three-day Train-the-Trainer course delivered to VCs
Recruitment, selection and training of volunteers at each site Data collection and monitoring Focus group interviews to explore the lived experience of volunteers Exploration of factors influencing implementation and impact

7 Ten Deliverables MONTH 12 First study subject approvals package
Ethics Committee-approved study protocol Registration as a clinical study in WHO or ICMJE-approved registry Approvals as required per clinical site MONTH 18 An international core curriculum for volunteers An international training programme for volunteer coordinators A Learning Lab for volunteer coordinators MONTH 26 Mid-term recruitment report

Report on five local culturally adapted Asset Based Community Development Care of the Dying Volunteer Services An overview of the effects of the programme as perceived by patients and families An explorative overview of the effect of the programme as perceived by health care professionals and volunteers An overview of factors that influence the implementation and impact of a hospital volunteer service for dying patients Three submitted papers and conferences abstracts
