1 6.5: Wind Unit 6: Meteorology March 6, 2012 Sanders

2 Wind Wind is air in motion.
It is the natural horizontal motion of the atmosphere. Wind is the horizontal movement of air. May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

3 Measuring Wind Wind has two qualities:
Vector Speed An anometer measures wind speed. May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

4 Wind Vane A weather vane measures wind direction.
Winds are named for the direction which they come from. May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

5 Air Currents The motion in a vertical, or nearly vertical, direction is called a current. May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

6 What Causes Wind? Winds are produced by atmospheric differences in
Pressure temperature This is caused by heat from the sun. May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

7 Breezes When the temperatures of neighboring regions become uneven.
The warmer air tends to rise and flow over the colder, heavier air. May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

8 Breezes Winds that begin in this way are usually affected by the earth's rotation. May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

9 Land / Sea Breezes Variations occur in temperature and pressure over land and water. The land is warmer than the sea by day It is colder than the sea by night. , diurnal changes, which apply a similar but more local effect. The variations of pressure thus induced evoke a system of breezes directed landward during the daytime and seaward at night. These land and sea breezes penetrate to a distance of about 50 km on and off the shore. May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

10 Valley / Mountain Breezes
Similar daily changes in temperature occur over irregular terrain and cause Valley breeze Mountain breezes May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology

11 Other Winds Other winds induced by local phenomena include whirlwinds
winds associated with thunderstorms May 17, 2019 Unit 6: Meteorology
