The author is showing the theme of finding one’s identity through Gogol’s interest in architecture since he was a young boy when he first visited Manhattan. This interest grew into a passion he then pursued in to college, grad school, and now as his career. Also, the author advances the plot by having Gogol invited to a party where he meets a girl names Maxine. I know she will be an important character to Gogol by the way the author describes his infatuation for her.
