2. WEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quick refresher: Pronouns are words that stand for other words. Examples: he, she, you, I, they, them, we, etc.
Turn to a partner. Decide who will go first.
The first partner has one minute to describe his/her best vacation or trip ever. The other partner can ask questions if necessary. The trick: the only pronoun you can use is “we.”
The second partner has one minute to describe his/her favorite room in his/her house. The other partner can ask questions if necessary. The trick: the only pronoun you can use is “we.”

3. Journal #12: Council of Vocations
The room is dead silent. There is not a hint of sound that we could hear, not even our own heart, because we knew that it had stopped. Then the council of vocations called us forth. Equality (fill in last name here), said the eldest councilman. We entered the room and stood before the council and awaited judgment. As the eldest and most wise of the council stood before us, we could feel our heart about to burst with anticipation. As he announced our vocation, the words echoed in the void of our mind, bouncing back and forth like a ball……..
Here you will fill in the rest of the story based on your life. What job would be your ideal and conversely which would be the worst and why. Make sure that you stay in the style of Anthem.

4. Anthem: Chapters 1-6 Task: to create a visual for one of the chapters
Specific Instructions:
1. You will be assigned one of the chapters.
2. In your groups, you have 10 minutes to create a visual that represents the contents of your chapter. It can be a scene from a chapter, it can be a collage, it can be symbols to represent something from the chapter, etc.
3. The “orator” of your group will present the visual and explain it to the class.

5. Philosophies and Terms
Collectivism: the subjugation of the individual to a group—whether to a race, class or state does not matter. Collectivism holds that man must be chained to a collective action and collective thought for the sake of what is called “the common good”
1) “And we take no heed of the law which says that men may not think of women, save at the time of mating” (40).
2) “ In the Home of the Students we arose when the big bell rang in the tower and we went to our beds when it ran again” (20-1).
Individualism: regards every man as an independent, sovereign entity who possesses an inalienable right to his own life, a right derived from his nature as a rational being. Individualism holds that a civilized society can be achieved only on the basis of the recognition of individual rights—and that a group, as such, has no rights other than the individual rights of its members.
1) “The laws say that men may not write unless the Council of Vocations bid them so” (17).
2)”The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them” (52).
Altruism: man has no right to exist for his own sake, that service to others is the only justification of his existence, and that self-sacrifice is his highest moral duty, virtue, and value…which means the self as a standard of evil, the selfless as a standard of the good.
1) “We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the State. Amen” (21).
2) “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (19).
