8 Meet Maya Angelou Maya Angelou is one of the most influential voices of our time. However, she had a turbulent childhood. After her parents’ divorce, she was sent to live with her grandmother in racially divided Stamps, Arkansas, where she experienced the brutality of racial discrimination. She also absorbed the unshakable faith and values of traditional African American family, community and culture. After being sent back to live with her mother, she was raped at the age of eight by her mother’s friend. She confided in the abuse to her brother, leading to the rapist’s arrest. Upon getting out of jail, the rapist was killed (many believe by Maya’s uncles). She believed her voice killed him because she told her brother of the crime. Subsequently, she went mute for nearly six years. She was then sent back to live with her grandmother where a teacher helped her regain her voice, her confidence and her pride. She went on to become a author, actress, journalist and civil rights worker and teacher, using her voice for positive change.

13 What is Socratic Seminar

14 Socratic Seminar is… It is not… A dialogue where one listens to the other side and works together to understand, find meaning and find agreement. Debate. Conversations are flexible and creates an open-minded attitude. Sticking with only one point of view and refusing to see things another way. Where participants feel free to express their ideas while careful not to attack another’s person’s opinions. Students creating a close minded attitude where they are determined to be right. It is ok to change your position based on the discussion. Students defends their positions and see it as a sign of weakness to change one’s position.
