January 1837: Papineau organizes protests Patriots choose to Resist arrest “Fils de la Liberte” (sons of liberty) join the fight – rebellion begins Attempt to arrest Papineau and he flees to USA (Full Rebellion) Patriots led by Wolfred Nelson win the village of Saint- Dennis Lose next battles of Saint-Charles and Saint-Eustache December 1837: End of Rebellion

December 1837: protesters gather at Montgomery’s Plan: attack York (Toronto) after soldiers go to Lower Canada (and take over) 500 Rebels march down Yonge Street (armed) Battle: 1 volley and first rank drops – confusion and rebels retreat/ flee Mackenzie flees to USA (dressed as a woman) Mackenzie sets up in Niagara and declares himself “president of the republic of Canada” – burn his supply ship = fails Spring 1838: Lord Durham Arrives
