1 Chapter 10 Uniform Motion

2 Students are expected to:
using linear experimentation with appropriate technologies analyse graphically and quantitatively the relationship among distance, time, and speed (scalar quantities) and the relationship among position, displacement, time, and velocity (vector quantities) distinguish between instantaneous and average velocity

3 What is a reference point?
An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point.

4 How do you graph motion? You can show the motion of an object on a line graph in which you plot distance against time. Time is along the x-axis and distance on the y-axis.

5 How do you interpret motion graphs?
A straight line indicates a constant speed The steepness depends on how quickly or slowly the object is moving The faster the motion the steeper the slope.

6 For position: A+ indicates up or to the right of the starting point A- indicates down or to the left of the starting point

7

8 Constant Velocity Positive Velocity
Positive Velocity Changing Velocity (acceleration) Slow, Rightward(+) Constant Velocity Fast, Rightward(+) Constant Velocity

9 Fast, Leftward(-) Constant Velocity
Slow, Leftward(-) Constant Velocity Leftward (-) Velocity Fast to Slow Negative (-) Velocity Slow to Fast

10 For velocity please note:
The velocity of -20m/s is not slower than +20m/s. These both have the same speed, but are moving in opposite directions. E.g. The red bike is moving at -20m/s to the left, while the blue bike is moving +20m/s to the right.

11 For displacement and velocity:
A+ indicates up or toward the observer’s right A- indicates down or toward the observer’s left

12 Science Inquiry 1 The Legal Speed Limit – Part 1
(page 326 on your textbook) Find a partner. Research about the legal speed limit in China. This assignment should be submitted on Oct. 12, 2012.

13 5) Snow mobiles 6) motorcycles Group yourselves into 3.
Assignment 1 Timeline Poster Topics: 1) Sports car 2) train 3) Bus 4) planes 5) Snow mobiles 6) motorcycles Group yourselves into 3. Make a timeline of at least 5 improvements of any topic above. Use pictures with short description of different stages of the development of your topic. Present your output in poster with labels and timeline. Explain the cost-benefit analysis of each development. Deadline : Oct. 19, 2012

14 Investigation 1 The Pendulum’s Path (page 347) Note: Don’t include Procedure 7.
