2 American bison They are heaviest land animals in North America. They have brown fur and two horns. Bisons are dangerous animals because they attack people.

3 Facts Height: 1.5-2 metres. Male weight: 907 kg.
Female weight: 545 kg. Lifespan: years. Food: grass, herbs, shrubs and twigs.

4 Females and males Male bisons fight for the females.The female gives birth to one calf after about nine months. At about two months, the calf will begin to develop horns.

5 Symbols The American bison in North America is used in official seals, flags and logos. In the United States the bison is popular in the Great Plains states. American bison is used for coins, too.

6 Population Their numbers shrank in the 19th century for overhunting. But the U.S. wild bison population today is less than one percent. Today there are around 20,000 bisons.

7 More information Bisons can run faster than some racehorses- up to 65 kilometres an hour. Bisons can live up to 40 years in capitivity. Bisons called sometimes Buffalos. Bisons brown fur bleaches to tan.
