1 Hitting the Slope(s)

2 What is Slope? Slope describes the steepness of a line
Slope tells how fast the value of “y” is changing compared with “x”.

3 SLOPE = rise run rise run
The change in the “y” direction is called the rise. The change in the “x” direction is called the run.

4 USING A GRAPH Pick two points on the line.
To find the rise, count the number of squares between the two “y” points. To find the run, count the number of squares between the two “x” points. Divide the rise by the run to find the SLOPE.

5 USING ORDERED PAIRS TO DETERMINE SLOPE (1, 1) AND (4, 2)
Y 2−Y 1 FIND THE Y COORDINATES {1, 2} SUBTRACT THE “Y” COORDINATES {2−1=1} THIS IS THE RISE {1} X 2−X 1 FIND THE X COORDINATES {1, 4} SUBTRACT THE “X” COORDINATES { 4−1=3} THIS IS THE RUN {3}

6 Y 2 − Y1 X 2 − X1 DIVIDE THE RISE BY THE RUN TO FIND THE SLOPE 1 ÷ 3 = 1/3

7 FINDING SLOPE USING A FORMULA

9 Two kinds of SLOPE

10 POSITIVE VS NEGATIVE SLOPE

12 The Amazing Zero Finding the X intercept Finding the Y intercept
Since Y = 0 where the line crosses the X axis, you can find the X intercept without a graph. Substitute 0 for Y in the equation. Solve for X. Since X = 0 where the line crosses the Y axis, you can find the X intercept without a graph. Substitute 0 for X in the equation. Solve for Y.

13 Finding the X intercept
y = −2x − 4 Substitute 0 for Y = −2x −4 + 4 = _________________ 4 = −2x − − Solve for X −2 = x The x intercept of y = −2x − 4 is −2

14 Finding the Y intercept
y=−2x−4 Substitute 0 for x y= −2(0) −4 y= 0 −4 y= −4 Simplify The y intercept of y = −2x−4 is 4.

15 What is the slope intercept form?
Y=mx + b Î Î SLOPE Y INTERCEPT m is the coefficient of the x term. m tells you the SLOPE. b a constant. b tells you the y intercept.

16 SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM y = −x − 2 y = mx + b y = −x −2 m is −1
Find the slope and y intercept of the equation. y = −x − 2 y = mx + b y = −x −2 m is −1 (−x means −1 x) b is −2 Write the slope-intercept form Write the equation. Find m and b

17 SLOPE- INTERCEPT FORM y = 4 − x 2
Find the slope and y intercept of the equation. y = − 1 x y = mx + b m is − 1 b is 4 Rearrange the terms Write the slope-intercept form Find m and b

18 y = 2x SLOPE - INTERCEPT FORM y = 2x y = 2x + 0 y = mx + b m is 2
Find the slope and y intercept of the equation. y = 2x Write the slope-intercept form. Write the equation. If there is no “b” term the y-intercept is 0. Find m and b. y = mx + b y = 2x y = 2x + 0 m is 2 b is 0

19 How to graph a line using a point and slope
SLOPE = RISE RUN SLOPE OF 2 3 means up 2, right 3 SLOPE OF −3 = −3 1 means down 3, right 1
