Thai Musical Instruments
A. Percussion Instruments 1. Ching – a pair of small, thick cymbals joined by a cord whose function is to keep time and indicate the pattern of a piece by the pattern of strokes they play.

2. Taphon – is a sacred barrel drum; Both heads are played with the fingers and hands. The pitch of the heads is controlled by a flour paste applied to the center of the head.

3. Khong Wong Yai - set of sixteen pitched gong-kettles that surround the musician and played with large, medium-hard mallets.

4. Thon – a goblet drum played with the hand.

5. Ranat ek – higher xylophone with bars usually made of hardwood
5. Ranat ek – higher xylophone with bars usually made of hardwood. The ranat ek provides the main melodic material for the ensemble.

6. Ranat thum – lower xylophone with bamboo or hardwood bars, like the ranat ek, but in a lower range. It plays a supportive role.
